If you have a production system still calling the Sora API, you have until 24 September 2026. After that it stops returning video.
This is not a "top 10 tools" post. Most of those were written by the vendors you would be migrating to. This is what actually changed, which model fits which Sora use case, and what breaks in your request bodies when you switch.
The timeline
OpenAI announced the discontinuation on 24 March 2026. The consumer web and app experiences shut down on 26 April 2026. The API sunsets on 24 September 2026. No successor product has been announced and no timeline has been given for video generation returning to OpenAI.
Reporting around the decision points to economics rather than capability. The product was expensive to run, usage fell sharply after the initial surge, and a studio licensing deal collapsed.
Two things that catch people out:
Third-party platforms reselling Sora capacity stop working too. Some have already paused their Sora endpoints ahead of the deadline rather than on it. If you are calling Sora through an aggregator rather than directly, your effective cutoff may already have passed.
Stored generations get deleted. Export anything you want to keep before the cutoff.
The mistake most teams make
There is no "new Sora." Trying to find a single drop-in replacement is the wrong frame.
Most teams used Sora for two or three distinct scene types. Audit what you actually generated with it, then pick a replacement per scene type rather than globally. The best model for product demos is not the best model for hero shots, which is not the best model for narrative continuity.

One caution on Veo. Reporting on developer API access is inconsistent, with some sources describing it as effectively enterprise-gated rather than openly available. If Veo is your migration target, confirm your own access path before you build against it rather than assuming parity with the consumer product.
What actually changes in your code
This is the part the roundups skip. Migrating is mostly not a rewrite.
Across the main alternatives, the shape of the request is close to Sora's. The field that trips people up is sizing: Sora took a single size parameter, while most replacements split that into aspect_ratio plus resolution. Your prompt and duration carry over. Your image field for image-to-video carries over. The model ID changes.
For Seedance specifically, the API route is not the same as the consumer product. API parity runs through Volcengine Ark, with BytePlus ModelArk carrying the newer endpoint. If you evaluated Seedance in a browser product and assumed an API existed behind it, check that before committing.
Two architectural notes worth taking from this episode. Generated video URLs expire, so download and store outputs in your own bucket on completion rather than holding references. And keep the video generation layer swappable, because single-vendor video infrastructure has now demonstrably failed once.
Cutover checklist
- Export every Sora prompt, duration and aspect ratio you have in production, plus any stored generations you want to keep.
- Audit which scene types you actually used Sora for. Most teams find two or three.
- Map your top ten prompt templates to replacement models per scene type.
- Regression test at 720p before spending on higher resolutions. Archive the outputs so you can compare.
- Run in parallel. Keep Sora and the replacement live side by side until a few days before the deadline, not until the deadline itself.
- Cut over production, update your internal docs.
- Revoke your Sora API keys once regression passes.
Do not leave this to the final week. Everyone still on Sora hits the same deadline at the same time, and onboarding, prompt retuning and asset recreation all take longer than expected.
What this means beyond Sora
Sora was the product that made AI video mainstream, and it was discontinued roughly eighteen months after launch by the company best placed to fund it. The lesson is not that AI video is a dead end. It is that the flashy part of AI video was always the easy part, and the durable products will be the ones solving paid work rather than producing the best demo.
