Nobody runs one SEO MCP server. The working stack is two to four, and the reason has nothing to do with features. It is about which data you are allowed to trust.

Most guides to SEO MCP servers rank them as if you were picking one. You are not. The practitioner pattern is two to four servers running together, and the reason is not feature coverage. It is that these servers return two fundamentally different classes of data, and an AI agent will blur them unless you stop it.

That distinction is the most important thing on this page, so it comes first.

First-party versus third-party data

First-party data is measured. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report what actually happened on your own property: real impressions, real clicks, real positions. It is ground truth, and it is free.

Third-party data is modelled. Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and DataForSEO produce search volumes that are estimates, traffic figures inferred from clickstream panels, and difficulty scores calculated by proprietary formulas. Ask two vendors about the same keyword and you will get two different numbers, and neither is wrong exactly.

The working rule: first-party data for anything about your own site, third-party for anything about someone else's. You cannot see a competitor's Search Console, which is precisely what third-party data exists to approximate.

Here is the part that matters for MCP specifically. An assistant with both servers connected will happily merge them into one confident paragraph, reporting a modelled competitor estimate and your measured click data in the same sentence with the same certainty. State in your prompt which source you want. Every time.

Start here: Google Search Console

Free, first-party, and the single highest-value starting point for most teams. It turns "pull the queries where we rank 8 to 15 with impressions above 500" into one sentence instead of a filtered export.

If you only connect one server, connect this one. Add Bing Webmaster Tools alongside it, also free, which matters more than it used to because Bing's index sits behind Copilot.

Ahrefs

The strongest commercial pick if you already pay for it. Official, hosted, OAuth, included with paid plans from Lite upward. Keyword difficulty, backlink profiles, competitor organic keywords, traffic history.

One detail that catches people: the original local MCP server built on API v3 is no longer maintained. Ahrefs moved entirely to the remote server. If you are following a tutorial that has you cloning a GitHub repo, it is out of date.

API integration units scale with your subscription tier, so heavy agent use eats quota.

DataForSEO

The raw data layer several other servers are built on top of, sold directly at per-call pricing. Pay-as-you-go with no subscription minimum, though a $50 minimum deposit is required, with a small trial credit on registration.

Reported SERP pricing runs around $0.0006 per first-page query, dropping at volume. At high volume that works out substantially cheaper than an Ahrefs or Semrush subscription. The trade-off is that you get an API, not a product. No managed UI, no agency features, and you need someone technical to make it useful.

Right answer for teams building their own tooling. Wrong answer for anyone who wants to ask a question and get a chart.

SE Ranking

The broadest coverage from a single connection: keyword research, rank tracking, backlinks, site audits, competitive research and AI visibility together. From around $39 a month, which makes it the value pick if you want one commercial server rather than assembling several.

Semrush

Competitive intelligence breadth, vendor-hosted, metered on the same API units as the Semrush API. Worth connecting if you already subscribe. Not worth subscribing to solely for the MCP server.

What the working stack looks like

Nobody runs one. Typical shapes:

Free starter. Search Console plus Bing Webmaster Tools plus GA4. Covers everything about your own site and nothing about competitors. Costs nothing and answers more questions than people expect.

Agency pitching. Add SEOptimer for fast audits on prospect sites.

In-house team with budget. Search Console plus SE Ranking for breadth, or plus Ahrefs if backlinks are the priority.

Building tooling. Search Console plus DataForSEO. Raw data, lowest cost, full control.

Setup runs 15 to 30 minutes per server, mostly depending on authentication. In Claude, it is Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector, paste the URL and complete OAuth.

Two limitations worth knowing

Almost every SEO MCP server is read-only. They fetch data. They do not change your site, update your tags or push fixes. Anyone selling MCP as SEO automation is describing something these servers do not do.

MCP does not replace judgement. What it removes is the wrangling: the exports, the tab switching, the copying between tools. That is genuinely hours a week. It is not strategy, and an agent with live data and no direction produces confident nonsense faster than before.

FAQ

What is an SEO MCP server? A connector that exposes an SEO data source as tools an AI assistant can call directly. MCP is an open standard published by Anthropic in November 2024. Instead of exporting CSVs and pasting them into chat, the assistant queries the tool live.

Is there a free SEO MCP server? Yes. Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics 4 are all free and all first-party, which makes them more trustworthy than paid third-party data for questions about your own site.

Which is cheapest for high volume? DataForSEO, by a wide margin, at per-call pricing rather than subscription. It requires technical capability to use well.

Can I use these with ChatGPT or Cursor? Yes. MCP is an open standard and is supported across Claude, Cursor and other clients, though support varies by server and client.

Do I need more than one? Almost certainly. One first-party server for your own data and one commercial server for competitor data is the minimum useful pairing.

How long does setup take? Roughly 15 to 30 minutes per server, mostly authentication.

How this guide was researched

Desk research, not hands-on benchmarking. Pricing, data-type and setup details were cross-checked across multiple independent sources in 2026, with figures verified against vendor documentation where available.

Pricing for metered services like DataForSEO changes, and API unit allowances vary by subscription tier, so confirm against the vendor before budgeting.
