The phrase "AI SEO tool" covers two products that do almost nothing alike, which is why most comparisons in this category are confusing.
A content optimizer like Surfer or Clearscope scores a draft against what already ranks. A full suite like Semrush or Ahrefs gives you keyword data, backlinks, rank tracking and site audits. Comparing an $89 optimizer against a $129 suite is comparing a tool to a toolbox. Most teams eventually buy one of each.
Sort that first, then the second question is the one that actually moves the bill.
The add-on that changes the real price
AI visibility tracking, whether your brand gets cited in ChatGPT and AI Overviews, is now the feature most likely to blow a tooling budget. Vendors handle it in two completely different ways.
Bundled. Frase includes AI visibility tracking across several engines on its base plans. Semrush includes AI Search Performance monitoring from its Starter tier.
Add-on. Ahrefs Brand Radar is a separate paid product on top of an Ahrefs subscription, with reported pricing from around $199 per platform up to roughly $398 for a multi-platform tier. Surfer's AI Tracker is similarly an extra rather than part of the base plan. We compare the dedicated tracking platforms separately in our AI visibility tools ranking.
The consequence is that two tools quoted at similar headline prices can differ by several hundred dollars a month once AI tracking is in scope. If citation tracking matters to you, check whether it is included before comparing anything else.
Pricing, with a warning
| Tool | Type | Reported entry | AI visibility tracking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frase | Optimizer + briefs | ~$39 to $49/mo | Included on base plans |
| Surfer SEO | Content optimizer | ~$49 to $99/mo | Paid add-on |
| SE Ranking | Suite | ~$52/mo | Included on higher tiers |
| Clearscope | Content grading | ~$129 to $189/mo | Not native |
| Ahrefs | Suite | ~$129/mo | Paid add-on (Brand Radar) |
| Semrush | Suite | ~$117 to $140/mo | Included from Starter |
| MarketMuse | Content strategy | Free tier to ~$149/mo, some tiers quote-based | Not native |
| Otterly.ai | AI visibility only | ~$29/mo | That is the whole product |
Treat every figure here as approximate. Reported entry prices for Surfer range across $49, $79, $89 and $99 depending on which source and which tier; Clearscope appears at $129, $170 and $189; Frase at $39, $45 and $49. Semrush restructured its plans in 2026, so a large share of published comparisons quote prices that no longer exist.
Those are not errors so much as snapshots of different tiers taken at different times. Check the vendor page before budgeting, and be sceptical of any comparison that does not say when it checked.
What each one is actually for
Surfer SEO pioneered the content score and still leads on real-time on-page optimization. Best when you are building briefs and writing against them. Entry tiers cap document counts, so check the limit rather than the price.
Clearscope is the editorial pick. Where Surfer is better at building a brief from scratch, Clearscope is better at grading and improving a draft that already exists, which suits teams with writers who are not SEOs. It costs more and does less, deliberately.
Frase is the value option, and the one whose positioning has shifted most. Combined SEO and GEO scoring in one editor at the lowest entry price in the category makes it the obvious starting point for solo operators and lean teams. The AI writing output needs editing, as all of them do.
MarketMuse does topical authority modelling rather than page-level optimization. The right tool when the question is what to write across a site, not how to improve one article. Has a free tier worth using before paying anything.
Ahrefs remains the reference for backlink data and has the cleaner interface of the two big suites. Its AI writing features are thin compared to dedicated optimizers, which is fine, because that is not what you buy it for.
Semrush is broader, covering PPC and social alongside SEO, and has invested more heavily in AI features including bundled AI visibility tracking. More capable and more cluttered.
SE Ranking is the budget suite, with the lowest entry price of anything offering the full range. Worth a look for agencies managing many small clients.
Otterly.ai does one thing: tracking whether AI engines mention you. At around $29 it is cheaper than adding equivalent tracking to a suite you already pay for.
Picking by bottleneck
The useful question is not which tool is best. It is which part of your process is slowest.
Writing is slow: Surfer or Frase. Writers produce drafts that miss the mark: Clearscope. You do not know what to write: MarketMuse. You cannot see competitors: Ahrefs or Semrush. You do not know if AI cites you: Otterly, or Semrush and Frase where it is bundled. Budget under $50: Frase, or SE Ranking if you need suite breadth.
Most teams running real content operations end up with one suite and one optimizer, which lands somewhere around $150 to $250 a month. Below that you are choosing; above $400 you are usually paying for seats and quota rather than capability.
What AI has not changed
The AI features in this category are mostly faster versions of things these tools already did. Content scoring got better suggestions. Keyword research got intent classification. Site audits got prioritisation. If the question is whether to shift budget toward AI search at all, see GEO vs SEO.
What none of them do is decide what is worth writing. Every tool here will happily help you optimise a page that should not exist, and the AI writing output across all of them still needs a person who knows the subject.
The category is also converging. Optimizers are adding AI visibility tracking, suites are adding content scoring, and visibility specialists are adding content recommendations. Buying for a feature gap that will close in six months is worth avoiding.
FAQ
What is the best AI SEO tool? There is no single answer, because content optimizers and full suites do different jobs. For content optimization, Surfer and Clearscope lead. For data and backlinks, Ahrefs and Semrush. For the lowest cost entry with both SEO and AI visibility scoring, Frase.
What is the cheapest option? Frase at around $39 to $49 for an optimizer, SE Ranking at around $52 for a full suite, Otterly at around $29 for AI visibility tracking alone.
Semrush or Ahrefs? Ahrefs for backlink depth and a cleaner interface. Semrush for breadth, PPC and social coverage, and bundled AI visibility tracking. Both are expensive enough that the choice should follow your actual workflow.
Do these tools help with AI Overviews and ChatGPT citations? Only some, and only for tracking. Semrush, Frase, Ahrefs Brand Radar and dedicated platforms track citations. Content optimizers like Surfer and Clearscope do not directly optimise for AI answers, though well-structured content helps indirectly.
Do I need both an optimizer and a suite? Most teams running regular content do, which is why realistic budgets land at $150 to $250 a month rather than the single headline price.
Will AI SEO tools write content for me? They will produce drafts. Across every tool in this category the output needs editing by someone who knows the subject, and publishing it unedited is how sites end up with volumes of content that ranks for nothing.
How this guide was researched
Desk research, not hands-on testing. Pricing, positioning and feature coverage were cross-checked across multiple independent comparisons in 2026.
Pricing in this category is unusually inconsistent between sources, partly because vendors run multiple tiers and partly because several restructured their plans this year. Where sources disagreed, the range is shown rather than a single figure chosen for neatness.
Capability claims are reported rather than tested. Treat this as a shortlist to evaluate, and verify current pricing on the vendor's own page before committing.
